Which Social Media Platforms Should I Use for My Business?

Jordan Pape — 2017-03-30

It is a general understanding that social media is an incredible resource for businesses looking to promote their brand online. In a technology driven world, there are so many existing social media websites that it’s hard to know where to begin. So, which social media websites should your business have a presence on?

In the brief time that I have worked at Your Web Pro, a business that offers affordable web design in Lubbock, I have gotten this question countless times. The answer really depends on the business, but here is a general guideline of the things you should consider when pursuing social media marketing.

  1. Get to know your demographic – You don’t go to a friend’s new house without knowing the address first. You need to know where they live before you take a trip. The same is with social media marketing: think about who your customers are. You interact with them, you know what they want and why they need your product or service. Know where your audience is living and start there. (Note: Different platforms have different demographics. Anyone over the age or 21 has a Facebook, but anyone younger primarily uses SnapChat. Just because the social media platform is there, doesn’t mean you should use it)
  2. Where is your audience interacting?- Engagement is an essential element of social media. According to Sprout Social , engagement is “not just a single interaction with one of your customers, but an open line of communications over a period of time.” Use outlets where people engage with your content. Increase your brand relevance by evaluating the different social media platforms.
  3. Relevant Content - People want to know what you have to offer them. It can’t only be promotional items. Personally, I don’t like it when people tell me what I need, especially if they don’t know the first thing about me. Relevant content is of utmost importance when managing social media in Lubbock and each platform has a different angle to content.
  4. Consistency and Productivity - Being on too many social media channels can negatively affect your productivity and your results. Knowing which platforms to focus on can really your marketing effectiveness.

Just remember, that building a following and increasing engagement can take some time to flourish. Be patient with content development. You want to be sure what you are putting out there is quality content. Even google algorithms know when content is just put out for the sake of content.

Brief, Brief, Brief Overview of Social Media Sites

Facebook – Leading social media platform by a landslide. Number one ranked by number of active users as of January 2017. Predominately Female demographic. Good network to reach people ages 18-49.

Instagram- 32% of online adults use Instagram. Predominately Female. 90% of users are Under 35. 53% of users follow brands
