When to evaluate your website: Trends Change

Websites are not like wine. They don’t get better with age. In fact, having an outdated website can be very harmful to your business. We recommend an annual review of your website just to make sure you are on track. That does not mean you need a complete overhaul every year, but just that you are keeping up with the needs of your web presence. In this series we will look at the four big areas that cause your website to stagnate: trends, technologies, targets, and tasks.

This week we are looking at the way trends change and how that impacts your website.

Trends Change

It was the Greek philosopher Heraclitus who said, “The only thing that is constant is change.” I wonder if he had a prophetic vision of the Internet when we said that. Trends for design and function on the Internet change almost by the minute. What was the top design last month is stale, the hip process last week is outdated, and the plan for today just got revamped. Trends for websites and your online presence change very fast. It is important, then, to make sure you are not looking too dated when a potential customer looks at your website.

Gone are things like frames, tables, and background music. Technologies like Flash are now crippling to visitors. While your website many be just fine to you, the real perspective must be considered from a brand new visitor’s standpoint. We have to make considerations for the devices they are using, their browsing habits, and the comfort level they have on the Internet. All of these things add together for a great user experience. That user experience is the first hurtle to converting that visitor into a customer.

Next Steps

So now what? Take a few minutes and look critically at your website. Also, look at a few other websites in and outside of your industry. From there, let’s make a plan of any changes that could be made to keep your website current.
